My Travel Bucket List
There’s something about travel that sets my soul on fire. I love it. I love going to new places. I love seeing architecture and history and art. I love exploring and finding hidden gems in the cities that I go to. The world just has so much to offer, and I want to partake of all of it.
Unfortunately, travel is not something that I do very often. I have a husband who travels for work a lot, and two small children at home. We’ve got a mortgage and car payments and student loans. BUT that doesn’t mean those things are excuses not to travel. Some of my favorite vacations have been to national parks in or near Utah that I’ve been able to take with my family. Yellowstone, Zions, and Grand Teton National Parks are some of the most gorgeous places I’ve visited. I love being in nature. There is something so peaceful about it.
Some day, when I get the opportunity, I’m going to travel the world with my husband and kids. There are so many places that are calling my name. There are so many amazing countries I want to visit. I have an entire list full of places to go, but these are my top 5 places.
My ancestors come mostly from the United Kingdom, Scotland in particular. I have always loved learning about my family connections to Scotland, and I would love to see the places that my family once lived. The rolling hills, glens, lochs, and castles are the things that my dreams are made of.
When I was in high school, I read the book “The DaVinci Code”. It was the first thing that really introduced me to the world of art. I loved it so much, that I ended up taking several art history classes throughout my time in high school and college. The art produced in Italy quickly became some of my very favorites. I studied paintings, sculptures, and architecture. From the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo to the David (also by Michelangelo) to the Colosseum in Rome to all of the Vatican, I have fallen in love with all of it. I want to explore and immerse myself in Venice and Florence, Rome, the Vatican, and Milan.
I know Turkey is a dangerous place right now, BUT have you ever seen the city of Istanbul? Once the bridge between Europe and the Middle East, this city has some of the richest history in the world. The Hagia Sophia (pronounced Hi-ya) is one of the most famous buildings in the world. It started out as a Byzantine Christian cathedral in the 6th century, and throughout the years was converted to a mosque by the Ottoman empire in the 15th century when the population of Istanbul became predominately Muslim. It now serves as a museum for the country of Turkey.
Another Dan Brown book that I love is called “Origin”. He writes amazing books that are filled with art and history, along with solving mysteries. Brown has a way of intertwining fact with fiction, and pulling inspiration from real works of art. His writings have helped further my love of art and history. This particular book takes place in Barcelona, and again, like the DaVinci Code, made me fall in love with Spain. There’s a cathedral in Barcelona, called the Sagrada Familia. It is one of the most interesting bits of architecture I have ever seen. The construction started in the late 1800s and is still not finished, but has plans to be completed by the early 2030s.
Call me the biggest nerd ever, but I LOVE the Lord of the Rings series. They are some of my absolute favorite books, and the movies are some of my favorites as well. The movies were filmed in New Zealand, throughout different parts of the country. The landscapes there are absolutely breathtaking. Its one of my dreams to go and do the tour of where they filmed the movies #forevernerd
I have so many other places in this world that I want to see. And I can’t wait until I have the means and opportunity to travel more. I would love to hear about your travel bucket list or your favorite places you’ve traveled in the comments below!
