A Behind the Scenes Look Into My Photography Business

Have you ever wondered what the process for a photographer is? Do you think its just about coming to the shoot, snapping some pictures, then going home and uploading them to a gallery for clients? There is actually a ton more work involved behind the scenes of what I do for my photography clients! Below you’ll discover all about the back end of my business!

First comes an inquiry

When I get an inquiry for a wedding or other session, I will always talk through with potential clients about what kind of coverage they need. Sometimes its just a simple shoot for their family, or if its a wedding, I discuss with them how many hours of coverage they’ll need on their wedding day, if they are having a temple wedding or a traditional ceremony, where the wedding/reception is taking place, if they need an engagement or formal session, etc. It really helps me to get to know the basics of what my clients need. I will then send out a welcome and information packet directly to their email where it has all the info they’ll need about working with me. I introduce myself a little bit, tell them about my process, explain to them the importance of engagement and formal sessions, break down my package pricing, answer my most commonly asked questions, and direct them back to my social media profiles and website.

The wedding is booked! Now what?

After a bride books her wedding with me, I will send her out a questionnaire for her to go through with her fiance. I want to get to know all about you and your love story! How did you two meet? How did he propose? Do you have any fun inside jokes or things/places that are special to you? I want to know all about what makes you and your relationship unique so that I can better understand you as a couple, and hopefully work some of that uniqueness into your wedding day! I will often try to sit down with my wedding couples to get to know them before I do any sort of shooting at all. We go over contracts and timelines, and just have fun getting to know each other over ice cream or hot chocolate.

From the initial meeting to the wedding day

After I chat with my brides, there is a lot of behind the scenes work that goes on. I will chat with my brides about where they want to do their engagement and formal sessions. I go scouting for awesome locations if they don’t have a particular spot in mind. I make sure my equipment is in good working order. After I do a shoot, I come home and not only edit the session and email it back to my bride, but I also back up all of the images in case something happens to my computer. I spend hours making sure that her gallery is perfect. I put her images all over social media and gush about how much I loved the shoot! And I’ll blog her session as well so that her friends and family can see more from the gallery instead of just the couple images I put up on Instagram. After the engagement and formal sessions, I make sure to keep in close contact with my brides to nail down schedules for the wedding day, details she will want me to know, getting a list of specific shots she wants and who she wants/doesn’t want in those shots, and any other information that is important for her big day.

The wedding day is finally here

Its finally wedding day! I always plan to leave my house in plenty of time to get to the temple or ceremony venue early. I don’t want there to be any surprises if my couple comes out of the temple earlier than planned! We get all the great family shots and some intimate images of just the couple after the temple or ceremony. Stealing my couples away from all the craziness of the wedding day for even 20 minutes can be a great breather for them, and allows us to capture great images of them just reveling in the fact that they are finally married. After the temple/ceremony, comes the reception. I always plan to stay the entire time unless I’ve been asked otherwise. I’ll capture detail shots of your reception venue, cake, flowers, rings, table set ups, etc. I love getting to see first dances and the daddy/daughter dance. It tugs at my heart strings every time. I capture images of your guests having a great time. And at the end of the night, I’ll get images of you two leaving as husband and wife. I often stay to help with cleanup or anything else that the mothers of the bride and groom need help with with.

What happens after the wedding day?

After the wedding day, I go through each and every picture and select the best ones to deliver to my couples. I spend several hours perfecting the gallery and making sure that all the editing matches. After the gallery is delivered, I will also send an email or a note thanking the couple for choosing me to be such an important part of their day. I’ll post more images on social media, and blog about their wedding day and include some of my favorite images from the day.

Weddings and couples are my absolute favorite to work with. I love seeing all the different and unique relationships that all my couples have. Its such a joy to work with them and help them create beautiful images that they will have forever. I hope this helps to see a little bit more into my process and what goes on behind the scenes!
