Bride Tip: What to Wear for Engagement Pictures
Congratulations! You’re engaged and you’ve picked out the perfect photographer to help capture your big day. One of the most important parts of your wedding will be your engagement photo session. This is the session you will do to get those perfect images for your save the date announcements and wedding invitations. One of the hardest parts of planning your engagement photo session will be the outfits you choose to wear. This post will go through some tips and tricks to make sure that you look your best for your engagement pictures!
What should I wear? How do I choose clothes? What are the best colors to wear?
Colors, layers, and textures are the best way to go when planning your outfits! A combination of these things will ensure that you and your fiance look your best during your shoot. But remember that a little bit goes a very long way. Crazy patterns and designs, too much texture, and bold lettering on clothing are often very distracting. Instead, try opting for something more simple. When picking out clothing for yourself and your fiance, think of creating outfits that will coordinate instead of being too matching. Choose several coordinating colors (TIP: look at a color wheel and choose colors that are opposite of each other!), and wear some combination of those. Then add in textures and layers! Something like a sweater, cardigan, scarf, or hat can be a fun addition to your outfit to make it stand out! Don’t forget to have your outfits represent you and your style!
Remember that every piece matters!
Tops, jackets, vests, etc should fit correctly. They should flatter the chest, stomach, and arms. Make sure that you are choosing clothing that flatters your body type. You don’t want your outfits to be too tight or too loose. Pants and skirts should also fit well on your hips and around your waist. Pairing your skirt or pants with the right top can create that perfect and balanced silhouette. Remember that its the tiniest details in your clothing choices that will make the biggest difference.
Don’t forget about the details!
Accessories are the perfect way to bring your outfit(s) together. Think of adding on things like sweaters, cardigans, vests, ties, belts, scarves, necklaces, or earrings. Adding on one or two of these elements in your outfit can really bring everything together and add that final, special touch. Don’t be tempted to go overboard on your accessories though. Remember that less is more. If you’ve chosen to wear a statement necklace and a cardigan, think about maybe skipping the big earrings or belt.
Don’t forget about your shoe choice! The right pair of shoes can make or break an outfit. Plan your shoe choice when you’re planning your outfits. And remember to take into account where you are going to be doing your engagement session. You don’t want to be wearing 4” heels if you are doing your session in the middle of the mountain. Likewise, you wouldn’t want to wear big, clunky boots if you are doing your pictures at a greenhouse or more elegant location.
One more thing to remember about your outfit choices and details: skip the oversized logos/sayings on your clothing. They rarely photograph well and look too casual for your engagement session. And remember that its always a nice idea to bring an outfit that your mom loves seeing you wear. Its a nice touch and will make your mom feel great that you took her opinion and/or advice on what to wear!
Using online inspiration
The internet is a great place to find clothing inspiration for your engagement session! Think of using resources like Pinterest or Google. Take some time to browse your favorite clothing websites (my personal favorites include H&M, Forever 21, Anthropologie, Free People, and Old Navy). You’ll often find ideas on how to pair certain pieces together. Check out fashion bloggers or style magazines! These are all great resources to find outfit inspiration, and most will have links that go directly to where you can buy a certain piece you love. Feel free to check out my Engagement Inspiration Board on Pinterest for ideas of what to wear!
